Historic Canajoharie Golf Course & Greenview Restaurant Are A Hidden Gem

FONDA – If you are looking for a golf course with terrific views and poses a challenge, look no further than the Canajoharie Golf Course & Country Club. A test for golfers of all levels, Canajoharie combines well-groomed fairways and excellent greens, along with friendly staff to make the perfect equation for an excellent golf outing.

The Canajoharie Golf & Country Club has been selected as Montgomery County’s May Small Business of the Month by County Executive Matthew L. Ossenfort and the Montgomery County Business Development Center because of the outdoor recreational opportunity it provides residents and visitors and its history of hosting community events and bringing people together.

The Canajoharie Golf Course is an 18-hole public golf facility three miles outside the Village of Canajoharie. Established in 1936, the Canajoharie Golf & Country Club, known as the Canajoharie Country Club) has been a cornerstone of the local community. Its goal is to provide a quality product for a fair price.

“Outdoor recreation is one of this county’s strengths and you can have it all at the Canajoharie Golf & Country Club,” County Executive Matthew L. Ossenfort said. “Being one of the three golf courses in the county, Canajoharie Golf Course is a great place to get outside, learn the game of golf, get some exercise and be with friends and family. This facility is outstanding and a real attraction for anyone looking to find outdoor opportunities that are available in Montgomery County.”

The club’s founder and golf course architect, Scott North, designed the original 9-hole layout. His son, John North, drew up designs for the additional nine holes and the club’s Board of Directors put his plans into play in the early 1990’s. The new 9-holes opened for play in 1992, completing the 18-hole course.

“Canajoharie Golf Club has the best greens in the area,” owner John Liu said. “This is a very well maintained course for being in a smaller area. It’s certainly a hidden gem.”

The Canajoharie Golf Course has an active league schedule, with many leagues that are open to the public. The course offers both morning and afternoon leagues to provide customers with many options to participate in the game of golf.

You may not know that two major champions have played golf in Canajoharie. In 1941, the course hosted an exhibition match, which included Masters and U.S. Open champion Craig Wood and PGA Champion Paul Runyan. Wood, a native of Lake Placid and Runyan, an Arkansas native, played in the match with John North and Guy Houghton Jr. Earlier in the year, previous to that July 22 exhibition, in Canajoharie, Wood had won both the Masters and U.S. Open. Wood and Runyan combined for more than 50 PGA career wins between them.

“A golf club facility may not be what many think of right away, when thinking about a small business, but the Canajoharie Golf & Country Club is certainly a worthy establishment for this honor,” Montgomery County Business Development Center CEO Ken Rose said. “Between the course and the restaurant on the property, they employ people, bring people to the area and give residents a chance to enjoy being outdoors.”

It’s not just golf, the venue has a terrific restaurant, the Greenview Restaurant on site, ready to fix you an outstanding meal. They also book parties or larger gatherings. For more details on the Greenview Restaurant, please call (518) 673-3635.

The Canajoharie Golf Course is located at 154 Golf Club Road, in Canajoharie. You can reach the course or book tee times by calling (518) 673-8183.
