JUNE SMALL BUSINESS OF THE MONTH
Vibrant And Vital Agricultural Store Has Continued Doing Business The Right Way
FONDA – For more than five decades, L.J. Hand Farm Center, Inc., has been doing business the right way, continuing to grow and expand. In 1967, when Lynwood J. Hand opened his business, he originally dedicated his shop as a tractor and machinery supply store, as well as seed, feed and fertilizer business. Ever since, the company has grown into a vibrant agricultural store that is a vital staple in the community and has helped keep farmers equipped for 54 years.
To recognize its importance to the agricultural community and its decades of success and growth, L.J. Hand Farm Center, Inc., has been named Montgomery County’s June Small Business of the Month by County Executive Matthew L. Ossenfort and the Montgomery County Business Development Center.
L.J. Hand Farm Center’s was nominated, in part, for its great Christmas and Easter events, and the addition of a new Halloween event, which are some of the best kept secrets around. At Christmas time, children can not only meet Santa, but Mrs. Claus, the elves and a variety of farm animals. These events are free of charge and any donations received are donated to local charities, such as Ayres Animal Shelter, Future Farmers of America and more.
“L.J. Hand Center, Inc., has been a staple to the agricultural community in Montgomery County ever since it opened,” Montgomery County Executive Matthew L. Ossenfort said. “People travel from miles around to shop here for their hardware agricultural needs. For more than five decades, L.J. Hand Farm Center has been a vibrant and vital part of the Montgomery County community.”
In 1984, Mr. Hand moved his store to its present day location in the Town of Glen. After his passing, in 2015, the store was handed down to his niece, Sandra Borden. She currently owns the business, and has been investing in updates and upgrades for the past six years.

The store continues to thrive and expand. New additions include a Farmer’s Wife section, which offers an area in the store specifically geared towards women and the business has added a Toy Cabin in the store for the younger shoppers.

Hand Farm Center is a terrific, locally-owned small business that specializes in agriculture,” Montgomery County Business Development CEO Ken Rose said. “We attract many companies and different businesses to the county, but agriculture and farming remains a key industry sector for us. Farming will always be important to this area and because of that, quality stores like L.J. Hand Farm Center will continue to thrive.”
