THE SALMON LAW FIRM NAMED MONTGOMERY COUNTY’S
DECEMBER SMALL BUSINESS OF THE MONTH
3rd Generation Amsterdam Law Firm Celebrated Its 110th Anniversary in December

FONDA – The Salmon Law Firm, PLLC, has a rich history in Amsterdam. This month, the firm celebrated its 110th anniversary since being founded by Carl S. Salmon, Sr., on Dec. 1, 1911, who opened his law office on East Main Street in downtown Amsterdam, with an initial investment of $510.90. Now, the firm is run by Carl’s grandson, Del B. Salmon, who remains focused on getting to know clients so they can provide the best answers for their problems, needs and goals.

The Salmon Law Firm, PLLC, has been named Montgomery County’s December Small Business of the Month by County Executive Matthew L. Ossenfort and the Montgomery County Business Development Center because of its backbone of philanthropy, dedication to advocating for the elderly and longstanding commitment to the local community.

“I congratulate Del Salmon and The Salmon Law Firm for 110 years of serving Montgomery County,” County Executive Matthew L. Ossenfort said. “Providing quality legal assistance to our seniors and elderly population is critical. I also want to recognize and highlight Del Salmon for his outstanding and philanthropic service. Del routinely and habitually goes above and beyond for this community and his service to local organizations is a testament to that fact.”

The Salmon Law Firm, PLLC, has four full-time employees and three part-timers, and the firm focuses its practice of law in the areas of Elder Law, Wills, Trusts, Asset Protection, Medicaid Qualification and Estate Administration.

“I am proud to serve Montgomery County as an Elder Law Attorney,” Del Salmon said. “Given our aging population and the firm’s long history with Montgomery County, I can’t think of anywhere else I would want to practice.”

The Salmon Law Firm, PLLC, is the longest enduring law firm in Montgomery and Fulton counties. Over its 110-year existence, The Salmon Law Firm has been located in several locations in downtown Amsterdam until it settled in its current office at 179 Wallins Corners Road, in the Town of Amsterdam, in 1993. The firm’s founder, Carl S. Salmon, Sr., went on to serve three terms as Mayor of the City of Amsterdam, from 1924-30, and later served as a Montgomery County Surrogate Court Judge. He was joined in the practice of law by his only son, Carl S. Salmon, Jr., in 1947, who was principal for 50 years until his retirement. James F. (Jim) Salmon was partner in the family law firm from 1976 until his retirement, in 2014. The current principal of the firm, Del B. Salmon, takes pride in his commitment to quality legal counseling and representation, as well as community service modeled by his forefathers.

“The Salmon Law Firm plays a significant role in the local community by providing advice, consultation and advocacy to and for older people and their families,” Montgomery County Business Development Center CEO Ken Rose said. “Elder law attorneys assist seniors and their families in maximizing the independence and quality of life of older persons and that is so important in an aging community such as ours.”

Del Salmon has followed the example of his grandfather and father by giving back to the local community. Del Salmon has served the Foundations of St. Mary’s Hospital, Fulton Montgomery Community College and the Montgomery County Office for Aging, as Chair of their Boards, while also serving on the Foundation of Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care and as Board Chair of Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care’s Operating Board, The Massry Assisted Living Center, as well as the Daughters of Sarah Nursing Center, in Albany. He is a member of the WMHT Board of Trustees and the Committee on Character and Fitness for the Fourth Judicial District. Del Salmon has also been the Legal Service provider for the Montgomery County Office for Aging for the past 25 years.

The Salmon Law Firm is also proud to announce that Philip V. Cortese, Esq., will join the firm in an Of Counsel position, effective Jan. 1, 2022. Cortese has enjoyed a long and successful career in private and public practice, most recently Montgomery County Family Court Judge and Acting Supreme Court Judge. Cortese also served as Corporation Counsel for the City of Amsterdam from 1988-92 and again from 1996-2002. Cortese will assist Del Salmon in providing high quality Estate Planning advice, elder law advocacy and documentation preparation for the firm’s clients.
